A Visit to Virgil Abloh “Figure of Speech” @brooklynmuseum

It is evident that Abloh was a visionary for the ages in particular my “ages.” He is my contemporary in that he was born September 30, 1980 and I existed in part in a world that he was instrumental in defining. His brilliance is underscored by the underlying tragedy that Abloh passed November 28, 2021 from a rare form of cancer at the age of 41 leaving behind his wife who was his high school sweetheart and their two children.

Abloh ascended into the upper echelons of fashion labels as Chief Creative Director and Founder of Off-White™️ and Men’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton transforming the luxury platform to represent the black and urban street style that had always been cutting edge in America and brought it to the forefront of the global commercial fashion industry. He revamped the ideas of what fashion is and who should be wearing it. He designed for the red carpet and everyday life. He did this through his artistic direction of Kanye West’s Donda creative agency, his collaborations with high profile labels like Nike, Louis Vuitton and IKEA, his own labels Pyrex Vision and more recognizably Off-White with it’s angled yellow and black striped industrial hazard pattern logo. The logo is a nod to his civil engineer and architecture degrees which have also informed his artistry. His design firm in its own words states:

ALASKA ALASKA A BLACK OWNED AND LEAD RESEARCH BASED DESIGN AND CREATIVE SERVICE ROOTED IN CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES, ESSENTIALLY QUESTIONING DESIGN WHILE DESIGNING "DESIGN".

A modern day Renaissance man he also deejayed and had his own podcast. He was the multi-dimensional seer and doer who remade the classics to become their own thing. He was in his own words a maker. Despite the luxury price tags he wanted to make art accessible and attainable for everyone, especially black youth. He mentored and provided scholarships for young artists with the Virgil Abloh "Post-Modern" scholarship fund amongst other efforts. His legacy lives on with the decades of ideas he left behind but also opening the door for others to come through.
