All Hail the Mighty Multi-Hanger! (aka Closet Organization Miracle Worker)
It’s January 2022 in NY. A new year is ushered in as I continue to eagerly await the day that I will shed my drab pandemic uniform of basic leggings and sweats for actual outfits of the sort whose colors, cuts and fabrics make me want to swirl my drink and twirl my hips as I sashay across the dance floor. There will be no mistaking that these future ensembles are meant for highly anticipated socializing and are clearly meant to be seen and appreciated for the fun loving attire they are. Me and my frippery long for the twinkling of old familiar lights while I partake in what were commonplace activities: water cooler talk under the too bright office LEDs, applying lipstick as I squint to see my reflection in the shadows of harsh dive bar bathroom halogens, leaning in to hear over the din as I dine elbow to elbow by romantic candlelight, making wishes as I blow out birthday party candles with a room full of my nearest and dearest, and some overdue salon highlights and lowlights.
Multi-Hangers vs. Single Hangers
I decided to channel my frustration. I needed to do something that would lighten my mental load. I accomplished this goal by actually making more physical space. I decided to organize my closet one hanger at a time. I chose the achievable goal of a small area of my closet to start because if I feel like a project is too big I often feel overwhelmed and will procrastinate and then just end up feeling worse. I started by hanging the first multi-hanger and after adding 5 shirts and ridding myself of 4 extraneous single hangers I could already see an improvement. It was the motivation I needed. I continued on until there was a big pile of my old single hangers. In less than an hour there were 20 tops on 4 shirt multi-hangers and 10 pairs of pants (and 1 pair of fancy leggings) on 2 pant multi-hangers. The hanger count shrank from the now jumbled single hanger mess on the bed to just these 6 multi-hangers and the result was so overwhelmingly positive I was all aglow. The satisfaction I derived from this simple project was exhilarating. I am already planning on purchasing more multi-hangers.

It is exciting to finally have the ability to see each article of clothing and know what I actually have. Being able to quickly locate an item saves precious time especially when I am in a hurry. I also no longer have to shove a hanger in the closet and hope that it’s actually hanging from the bar without getting hooked onto another hanger or have it not even on the bar but simply sandwiched between garments. (To be fair this may also be a short person problem though I am 5’4” and technically not petite as US women’s measurements go.) I am thrilled that I will no longer hear the dreaded crack of one of my slim single hangers reminding me that while it is slim, it is not very mighty. I am discovering with this new clarity what clothing is no longer serving me whether it’s style wise or size wise. Covid calories and age not withstanding, I have a toddler and have been many sizes and shapes over the past several years. I am now able to make additional room by rehoming those items and passing them on which is not just great for me but someone else and the planet. All of these life changing benefits I owe to the multi-hanger. I cannot wait to get dressed, really dressed, again!
No More Wire Hangers!
I also bought a holder for my husband’s wire shirt hangers which is a genius invention. I now have a convenient and easy way to store them so I can return them to the dry cleaner. Another win for me, the dry cleaner and the planet!
