Gift Card Hack: How to make cents of it all

This is a digital card

Let me show you how to maximize its benefits

Have your ever tried to buy something with a digital credit/voucher/card from one of the primary credit card companies (meaning not directly from a retailer) but it does not cover the cost of the item you want?

You may have gotten a refund or rebate or an e-mail or text gift card and you can only use it online. There is no physical card to bring to a store for an in person purchase. This seems to be happening more and more these days with our virtual economy. The amount you can spend may have started with a nice big round number and then you purchased something. You probably strained yourself trying to find an item or the right combination of items that equal or come as close to the original amount in order to best utilize that balance without going over. It’s like the Price is Right Showcase Showdown!

After making a purchase which was “less than or equal to your available balance” there was a remainder left on the card and you probably thought, well, that was fun but now I’m done. After all, there probably isn’t much you can buy with the resulting pittance as most online stores do not allow two forms of payment unless the digital voucher/credit/card originated at their specific store. So, if you added this non-store related digital voucher/credit/card as payment on a purchase that is more than the existing balance, the transaction would not go through or it will automatically default to a backup payment that can cover the whole cost of the purchase. The latter situation happened to me recently. I was hoping that it would apply digital card balance and then charge the rest to the backup payment card but it went straight to the backup card which was obviously not the desired result.

So, what can you do? I am here to show you how easy it is to use this money and utilize these digital vouchers/credits/cards for all they are worth. Instead of having to use a different method of payment completely out of your own pocket or worse never using your balance because you can’t find anything you want to purchase that is equal to or below your balance, here’s a hack to maximize your gift card down to the last cent. Are you ready? Okay, it’s really this simple:

Find an online retailer that allows for custom amount gift card purchases down to the penny. In my case it was as easy as going to Amazon. I used the $22.02 balance I had on my digital card and purchased an Amazon e-gift card for that exact amount. Just bypass all the preset amounts and go to the $ box that says Enter amount and type in your magic number. In my case it was $22.02. I was now able to use it to purchase items that me and my family really wanted and needed without worrying if the gift card would be applied or performing mathematical gymnastics. I was able to purchase the following early holiday presents during Prime Days and apply the $22.02 to the final purchase price.

I hope this hack is helpful for all of you especially as we roll into the season of gifting and receiving. Use your gift cards to spread joy!
