David LaChapelle “make believe” exhibit @fotografiska NYC

This past week I went to see the David LaChapelle show “make believe” at Fotografiska in NYC. LaChapelle who at 17 started taking photographs for Andy Warhol for Interview Magazine was at the top of the fashion pyramid when I was a fledgling stylist. His saturated colors, larger than life models and meticulously styled sets created bold sexy statements that felt fresh and new and helped define the early aughts and everything that came after. There are photo filters that owe their existence to his lush photography. Through his lens and imagination and talent he could make a still life flower arrangement look exquisitely delicate and perverse at the same time. His passion and ideas were constantly evolving. LaChapelle often mixed his religious views along with his social views, sex, sexiness, celebrity as well as nostalgic kitsch and a cheeky sense of humor to create subversive and controversial art that somehow was still commercial because it was so dynamic and exciting to look at. Like Michaelangelo, you can feel his subjects moving and straining to express the human condition. He has proven to be one of the most influential photographers of the 21st century.
